Raksha Bandhan is also called Rakhi Purnima or simply Rakhi or "Rakhri", in many parts of India. The same festival is celebrated as Janai Purnima in Nepal. The festival is a Hindu festival and is also a secular festival which celebrates the love and duty between brothers and sisters. The festival is also popularly used to celebrate any brother-sister relationship between men and women who are relatives.

The chaste bond of love between a brother and a sister is one of the deepest and noblest of human emotions. 'Raksha Bandhan' or 'Rakhi' is a special occasion to celebrate this emotional bonding by tying a holy thread around the wrist. This thread, which pulsates with sisterly love and sublime sentiments, is rightly called the ‘Rakhi’. It means 'a bond of protection', andRaksha Bandhan signifies that the strong must protect the weak from all that’s evil.
