Parents and elders often hold children back from fasting. This is because there is a widespread belief that temporarily abstaining from food stunts growth. If taking fast hampers our height, then it has to be a bad practice.
Let me prove this point wrong. Note that *eating food doesn't make us grow taller*. Our height is determined by genetics and hormones play a role in achieving it. Seriously poor nutrition too can stunt growth; lets not deny that fact.
Here are some benefits of fasting:
✓ It gives rise to Human Growth Hormone (HGH). This hormone is responsible for over - all body development. Hence, secretion of this hormone in more amounts improves our growth.
✓ Our metabolism becomes faster; we will be more energetic.
✓ Encourages better insulin sensitivity, enhances cardio - vascular health.
✓ Blood sugar and pressure level drops down significantly.
✓ It helps youngsters to become more disciplined and mannered.
✓ Fasting is an act of worship in several religions...
✓ It helps us understand the feelings and suffering of the poor and needy. Thus, encouraging us to feed them when we are abstaining from food.
✓ This way, fasting converts individuals into responsible and healthy citizens.
One more point to note is that parents such as Indian and Indian subcontinental believe that eating bulk of food help kids to grow bigger and taller. This is completely false. Eating more than vital is termed as 'Over - nutrition' which too is a dreadful condition.
We have to eat only in moderate amounts. Or else, obesity, increased risk of cancer, heart attack etc. are waiting.
Now, why fasting does not stunt growth?
◘ As mentioned before, it gives rise to Growth Hormone and improves IGF-1 levels.
◘ Our body digests food in 4 hours. More space and time helps more growth hormone secretion.
◘ Food is resource for growth; It doesn't push or force growth.
◘ Fasting is a natural medicine to many diseases. Aristotle, a great thinker said that he fasted for better physical and mental health.
◘ Animals too fast when they are sick.
I hope this answer helped you understand the physical and mental changes that our body goes through while fasting. We have remove the unwanted myths that are revolving in our society.
