Thomas A. Edison once said, “A genius is a talented person who does their homework.” Sure, he may not have been referring to a student of this day and age, but it is ironic how well this line works in a classroom in the twenty-first century. In this essay, we will be debating whether students should be assigned homework or not.

The biggest advantage to doing exercises on topics covered in class, is that it challenges whether the concept was clear or not. When a teacher finds an issue with the work submitted, they know what parts to go over again in class.

However, when homework is given too often or used as a punishment instead of a medium through which a person can learn, it loses its purpose. Often, various subject teachers assign homework to a student without doing their due diligence on how the student will cope with it. When this happens, there is an added pressure on the class, which leads to stress.

Homework can be beneficial only when it is allowed to be. It can cause severe harm when misused and should be given once in a while, so that both the student and teacher can learn from it.
