Ques - show how √5 can be represented on the number line .



Ans-



Construction steps :-



(1) Draw a number line.



(2) Take 'O' as origin on it , representing 0.



(3) let OA = 2 units and draw AB perpendicular to OA, such that AB = 1 units.



(4) Join OB. then, with O as centre and OB as radius, draw an arc which cuts the number line at P. Then, OP = OB = √2 units .



since, OA = 2 units (3cm)



as, 1 unit  = 1.5cm



AB is perpendicular to OA ,



Proof:-



so, AB = 1 units



then,



BY P.G.T.,



OB² = OA² + AB²



=> OB² = 2² + 1²



=> OB² = 4+1



=> OB² = 5



=> OB = √5
