Explanation:

Harvey's group had a noble goal: creating an objective measure of human pain. They devised a unit for the intensity of pain, which they named the dol, with the name coming from the Latin word for pain, dolor. Ideally, the measurement would be applicable regardless of the type of pain.

Based on the evidence of experiments conducted by Hardy and his team, unit of pain is 'dol'(Latin word for pain, dolor) - composed of two just perceptible steps in discrimination of stimulus intensity. But the idea never really made it far.

They subjected 13 women to heat radiated pain in between labor contractions,to quantify the intensity of labor pains. They quantified the pain during labor in stages of dols.

The first stage with a pain of 2 dols

As the child crowns, the pain reached to 10.5 dols

Finally, subsiding of the pain from 3 dols in 2 hours after birth

Pain is subjective. For example, what would hurt me at a 5 on a scale from 1 to 10, another person would call a 8 and another would call a 3. It depends on their own personal threshold pain.

Many from the field of medical profession uses a scale 0-10 to measure the amount of pain and have classified as below:

2-3 Mild pain

4-5 Discomforting - moderate pain

6-7 Distressing - severe pain

8-9 Intense - very severe pain

10 Unbearable pain
