Answer:

Explanation:

Indian Drainage system is formed by two types of rivers-Himalayan Rivers and Peninsular Rivers. Indian Drainage System has three major systems- Indus River System, Ganga River System and Brahmaputra River System. About 77% of Indian Drainage system is made up of these three major Systems.

Dissimilarities between Himalayan and Peninsular rivers:

i. Himalayan river drainage system is perennial whereas Peninsular Drainage systems are dependent on rainfall.

ii. Some major Himalayan rivers are Ganga, Yamuna, Indus, Brahmaputra, Ghandak, Kosi, Satluj, Jhelum etc.

iii. Some major Peninsular rivers which flow from east to west drained in the Arabian Sea are Narmada and Tapi whereas other peninsular rivers flow from west to east and drained in Bay of Bengal are Mahanadi, Krishna, Godavari and Kaveri.

iv. These west to east flowing rivers like Mahanadi etc. forms delta before entering the Bay of Bengal while Narmada and Tapi do not form a delta.

v. Narmada and Tapi flow through rift valleys. They are the only rivers in India which flow through the rift valley.

vi. Himalayan rivers also form delta and Sunderban delta is the example of the Himalayan river delta.

Similarities between Himalayan and Peninsular rivers:

i. Himalayan and Peninsular rivers are drained in Bay of Bengal except few of them like Narmada, Tapi.

ii. The water of both the Rivers is useful for multipurpose hydropower plants i.e. they are utilized for power generation and for irrigation, drinking water and for inland navigation in the plains.

iii. As they provide water for irrigation, rivers become a source of livelihood for both in northern plains and peninsular plateau, but soil deposited by Himalayan rivers is more fertile.

iv. Peninsular rivers receive water from rainfall, the Himalayan rivers receive water from both rains and the melting of ice in the glaciers.
