What is a soil profile ?

A vertical section in which all the layers of soil profile is visible is called a soil profile .

There are 6 layers of soil -

1) O Horizon - ( contains humus or organic matter ).

2) A Horizon - ( Top soil )

3) E  Horizon - ( Eluviated horizon ).

4) C Horizon - ( Contains parent materials ).

5) C Horizon - ( Contains bedrock ).

From where a soil profile is visible ?

1) We can see soil profile by standing near a recently dug trench.

2) We can see soil profile by standing near the area  where is building is being constructed.

\textbf{Soil profile }:

The vertical section of soil showing the various layers of soil is called the soil profile.

Layers of soil ------

1. A-horizon :

It is the uppermost horizon of soil. It is dark in colour and contains very fine particles of rock. It is rich in humus too, and is soft, porous and can hold more moisture than any other layer.

2. B-horizon:

This layer is below A-horizon and also known as sub-soil. It has very little humus and is slightly harder than soil of A-horizon, also it is in light colour.

3. C-horizon:

It is the lower most later o the soil, which lies below the sub soil layer. It is made up of hard stones and rocks with cracks and crevices. This is just above the bedrock layer
