The question refers to the story ‘The Cop and the Anthem’ by O’Henry. A poor man called Soapy is intent on going to j(a)il so that he doesn’t have to worry about food and shelter during the severe winter months. He needs to do something that will get him arrested, and so he knowingly picks up a stone and purposely throws it at the shop’s window, inst(a)ntly breaking the glass. However, the cop does not believe that Soapy has broken the shop window because Soapy didn’t run away like a miscreant should.
