Since AD is the angle bisector:

AB / AC = BD / CD

=>  AB / BD = AC / CD

=> AB / BD =  (AB + AC) / (BD + CD)

=> AB / BD = (AB + AC) / BC

But AB + AC > BC since ABC is a triangle, so

AB / BD > 1

=> AB > BD.

Anonymous: First line is basic theorem about angle bisectors. The triangle inequality AB + AC > BC is obvious (a straight line is the shortest path from B to C). The rest is simple algebra.... Just work through it carefully!
