adding \: (1) \: and \: (2) \: we \: get

ax + bx + ay + by =  {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}

x(a + b) + y(a + b) =  {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}

(x + y)(a + b) =  {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}

x + y =  \frac{ {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2} }{a + b}

x + y = a + b
