Answer:

There are two solutions:

For x = 2 , y is 4

For x = 4, y is 2

Step-by-step explanation:

x² + y² = 20 --(1)

x + y = 6

x = 6 - y --(2)

Put value of x in eq.--(1)

(6 - y)² + y² = 20

36 + 2y² - 12y = 20

2y² - 12y + 36 - 20 = 0

2y² - 12y + 16 = 0

y² - 6y + 8 = 0

y² -2y - 4y + 8 = 0

y(y - 2) -4(y - 2) = 0

(y - 4)(y - 2) = 0

y - 4 = 0    ; y - 2 = 0

y = 4 and y = 2

When y = 4, put value of y = 4 in eq.--(2)

x = 6 - y

x = 6 - 4

x = 2

When y = 2, put value of y = 2 in eq.--(2)

x = 6 - 2

x = 4
