Let 1/(x + y) = a and 1/(x - y) = b  therefore,   57a + 6b = 5 -------- (1) 38a + 21b= 9 -------- (2)   Solving equations 1 and 2, we get   A = 1/19    and b = 1/3   But 1/(x + y) = a and 1/(x - y) = b   ⇒ (x + y) = 1/a = 19   ⇒ x + y=19 -------- (3)   ⇒ x - y = 1/b =3   ⇒ x - y = 3 ----------(4)   Solving equations 3 and 4, we get x = 11 and  y = 8.
