Given data : The salary of a clerk was increased by 14 % . His present salary is Rs 1400.

To find : What is the salary before the increament.

Solution : Let, before the increment the salary be x.

Hence, salary increased by 14 % of x.

➜ salary increase by = 14x/100

Hence,

➜ Present salary of clerk = x + (14x/100) ----{1}

Here, a/c to given;

➜ Present salary of clerk = 1400 ----{2}

Now, from {1} and {2}

➜ 1400 = x + (14x/100)

➜ 1400 = 100x/100 + (14x/100)

➜ 1400 = (100x + 14x)/100

➜ 1400 = 114x/100

➜ 114x = 1400 * 100

➜ 114x = 140000

➜ x = 140000/114

➜ x = 70000/57

➜ x = Rs 1228.07 (approx)

Answer : Hence, the salary before increment is Rs 1228.07.

{More info :

➜ Increment = Present salary of clerk - x

➜ Increment = 1400 - 1228.07

➜ Increment = Rs 171.93 }

{Verification :

➜ Present salary of clerk = x + (14x/100)

Put value of x in above equation.

➜ Present salary of clerk = 1228.07 + 14 * 1228.07/100)

➜ Present salary of clerk = 1228.07 + (17192.98/100)

➜ Present salary of clerk = 1228.07 + 171.9298

➜ Present salary of clerk = 1399.9998

➜ Present salary of clerk = Rs 1400 (approx)

Hence it verified.}
