Mistake in question:

Correct question :

Solve x + y = 3 and 2 x + 5 y = 12 find the value if m for which y = m x + 5  .

Answer:

m = - 3 .

Step-by-step explanation:

Given :

2 x + 5 y = 12

2 x = 12 - 5 y  .... ( i )

x + y = 3

Now multiply by 2

2 x + 2 y = 6

2 x = 6 - 2 y  ... ( ii )

From ( i ) and ( ii ) we have

12 - 5 y = 4 - 2 y

5 y - 2 y =  12 - 6

3 y = 6

y = 2

Now put y = 2 in ( ii )

2 x = 6 - 2 y

2 x = 6 - 4

2 x = 2

x = 1

Now we have x = 1 and y = 2

We have to find value of m

So putting values of x and y in given to get value of m

y = m x + 5

2 = m × 1 + 5

m = 2 - 5

m = - 3

Thus we get answer.

2x + 5y = 12

x + y = 3

y = mx + c

___________ [GIVEN]

• We have to find the value of m

____________________________

\implies 2x + 5y = 12 ______ (eq 1)

\implies x + y = 3

\implies x = 3 - y _______ (eq 2)

• Put value of x in (eq 1)

\implies 2(3 - y) + 5y = 12

\implies 6 - 2y + 5y = 12

\implies 3y = 6

\implies \boxed{y \:=\: 2}

• Put value of y in (eq 2)

\implies x = 3 - 2

\implies \boxed{x\:=\:1}

______________________________

y = mx + 5

\implies 2 = m (1) + 5

\implies 2 = m + 5

\implies m = - 3
