The production of glycogen from glucose is termed as glycogenesis. It occurs in the cytosol and needs UTP and ATP, besides glucose. The following are the steps of glycogen synthesis:
1. UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase catalyzes the reaction of glucose-1-phosphatase and UTP to UDP - glucose, and PPi.
2. Pyrophosphates transform PPi and water into two Pi.
3. Glycogen synthase supplements a glucose unit from UDP-glucose to glycogen forming a bigger glycogen molecule and UDP.
