Sound travels a certain distance through a steel rail in 0.3 s how much time will it take to travel the same distance in water? The speed of sound in steel in 5000 m/s and that through of water is 1500 m/s

Distance = Speed * time
= 5000m/s * 0.3s
= 1500 m

Distance = Speed * Time
1500m = 1500 m/s * T
T = 1 second.

Hope this may help you..

Step-by-step explanation:

Timetaken=SpeedofsoundDistancetravelled

The time taken through the iron rail and air are calculated as follows.

(a) In iron rail:

Timetaken=5280m/s3300m, given that the speed of sound in iron rail is 5280 m/s and the length is 3.3 km, that is, 3300 meters.

= 0.625 seconds.

(b) In air:

Timetaken=330m/s3300m, given that the speed of sound in iron rail is 330 m/s and the distance is 3.3 km, that is, 3300 meters.

= 10 seconds.

Hence, the time taken for the sound to travel through the iron rail and air are 0.625 seconds and 10 seconds respectively.
