Good morning everyone. I am going to expatiate on ‘Foreign channels are threat to our culture’. Shakespeare wisely said, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Undoubtedly, the IT revolution has brought a spate of TV channels that are easily accessible. Cable Television and DTH satellite Television facilities have offered viewers the joy of watching myriads of TV channels. Watching foreign TV channels was never so easy ever in the past.
Since Western culture is quite open and advanced, there is no restriction on pornographic and obscene channels. However, our culture is based on values of abstinence, self-discipline, and self-control. Such adult channels are really affecting our culture. The westernization process of majority of our youth has already started. Preference for western style of life is visible everywhere. Fast food, western clothes, eating habits, smoking, drinking, going out, pubs, drive-through foods, jeans, etc. all are indicators of the westernization of our culture.
It depends upon us whether we allow ourselves to be influenced by the foreign channels or not. But one thing is sure; if we will be watching foreign channels most of the time every day, it is definitely going to influence our culture. Foreign channels have already influenced our culture a lot. We need to take very careful precautions to preserve our culture in the midst of this onslaught of foreign entertainment and information on the impressionable minds of our children. They show such things which are not worth watching and are absolutely in contrast to our cultural beliefs and customs. The foreign channels hit at the roots of the India culture, moral values and social responsibilities. Nowadays we see that the younger generation has a liking for the western culture. The youngsters feel that the western culture is more open and broadminded. It gives them more freedom.
So they want to adopt western ideas. All this has actually come about due to the foreign television channels and programmes. Youngsters show no interest in their own culture and adopt the western style of living due to which there is a gap between them and the society in which they are living. They copy their favourite stars and start smoking and drinking. The movies shown on the foreign channels have totally changed the minds of teenagers. They have started arguing with their parents and asking for more freedom. In the process they are unable to distinguish between what it good for them and what is bad.
There are many shows which have increased the number of conflicts among the family members for silly things. These conflicts cause problems like depression and hypertension. Children start using abusive words. They also use coding languages.
The Indian culture teaches us to respect elders and inculcates moral values while the foreign channels and their programmes teach the children and youngsters to be arrogant and disobedient. In this way we see that foreign channels are a threat to our culture.
