Smoking: A Silent Killer
There is famous saying about smoking which says, “Smokers don’t grow old…they die young…” The paradox about smoking is beyond the ken of wise-men. It is written on every cigarette packet in bold that CIGARETTE SMOKING IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH, still people not only buy them, but also smoke them! Smoking cigarettes is very hazardous to the health of smokers and the health of the people around them. Many people die because of inhaling cigarette smoke every year. Some of the harmful ingredients in cigarette smoke are nicotine, carbon monoxide, and tar. Nicotine is addictive. It is also one of the most dangerous chemicals in cigarette tobacco.
Tar contains at least 30 cancer causing irritants. It is a mixture of several substances that condense into a sticky substance in the lungs. Some respiratory related diseases that have been linked with smoking are lung cancer, cancer of the larynx, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. The hazards of these diseases increase with the quantity of cigarettes smoked and the length of time the habit continues.
Cigarette smoking has disastrous consequences: It damages just about every organ of the body and leads to the general deterioration of the smoker's health. Let’s join hands to make the world as much smoking free as possible.
'Smoking is injurious to health' says the statutory warning on each and every packet of cigarettes to remind its consumer of the hazards of smoking. The government has done its duty by giving the warning, now it's upto the individual whether to take it seriously or let it vanish in the air like the smoke of his cigarette.
Smoking might begin with 'just a try', coaxing by peers, or curiosity to know how it feels, but it grips people in its clutches which are hard to escape. When youngsters watch their favorite celebrity smoking on the big screen, they think 'it's cool' to smoke without realizing the difference between the real life and dazzle on the screen. Once habituated, some may take to chain smoking which gradually totally damages their respiratory track; cough, wheezing and asthma threat them. Among smokers, eighty four percent deaths occur due to lung cancer and eighty three percent from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Not only smokers, people in direct contact with smokers are also hit due to passive smoking. Would anyone like to risk life of his dear ones along with his own?
The answer is to exercise will power and say no to cigarettes. Strong will power can defeat all temptations and help one to make right choices in life. So, next time your friend offers you a puff, say 'No' without a second thought. And if you have already fallen a prey to this deadly habit, try nicotine replacement therapy or visit a smoking cessation center. This body is a precious gift of god for us and we should not contaminate it by the dark fumes of cigarette smoke. Stay healthy, stay happy.
