Heya friend!!
Rajdeep here....
Thanks for asking such an important question!
An endocrine gland is a gland which does not bear ducts and their secretions (hormones) are directly poured into the blood stream.
Now, there are many endocrine glands in our body. They are:
1. The Pituitary gland: This is the master gland, whose secretions control the secretions of other glands. Some of its secretions are:
(a) Growth Hormone (GH)
(b) Adreno-Cortico Tropic Hormone (ACTH)
(c) Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
(d) Anti-Diuretic Hormone (ADH) [From posterior lobe].
2. The Thyroid Gland: This gland secretes Thyroxine, which :
(a) Increases Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR).
(b) Increases glucose consumption in alimentary canal.
(c) Increases heartbeat and body temperature.
3. The Adrenal Gland: This is a cap shaped gland, each located on the top of each kidney.
Their cortex secretes 50 different types of Cortico-Steroid hormones,
(a) Mineralocorticoid
(b) Glucocorticoid
(c) Gonadocorticoid.
Their medulla secretes:
(a) Adrenaline, which helps to fight emergency situation.
(b) Noradrenaline
4. Testis: These are present in males only. The Leydig cells of the Testes secrete the Male Sex Hormone, Testosterone, which helps in development of accessory sexual characters in males.
5. Ovary: These are present in females only. The Graafian follicle of the ovary secretes Oestrogen and the Corpus Luteum secretes female sex hormone Progesterone.
6. Parathyroid: Located below the thyroid gland, helps thyroid in its functions and secretes Calcitonin.
7. Pancreas (Mixed gland)...The Islets of Langerhans is endocrine...the alpha cells secrete Glucagon, Beta cells secrete Insulin and Delta cells secrete Somatostatin.
8. Placenta(Though not a gland, but endocrine in nature): During pregnancy, it secretes Hormones like HCG, Dopamine, Progesterone, etc.
Thanks!
