The hotly debated issue around which the novel Indulekha revolved was about the marriage practices followed by the upper-caste Hindus of Kerala. It was customary in the past for the upper-caste Namboothiri Brahmin males to get married to lower-caste Nair women. This practice was called sambandham. The novel is about how the heroine Indulekha, a Nair girl who is in love with Madhavan resists such practices and snubs a Brahmin man who seeks her hand in marriage.

The novel highlights the Namboothiri males’ not willing to adapt to change of times and Nair women’s resistance to the practice of sambandham.
