Explanation:

The experiment of Oersted showed that there is a connection between electricity and magnetism. He noted that a magnetic field is produced by a present carrying wire. If you hold a compass needle next to a present carrying wire, the deflection would appear.

He observed that a conductor carrying a current can deflect a magnetic compass which is placed nearby. On this basis it was concluded that the current carrying creates a magnetic field. On the insertion of a soft iron in a current carrying solenoid, the magnetic field because of the solenoid increases.
