The variations in temperature among the various parts of India are caused by the following factors:

Latitudinal extent of country from 8° N to 37° N causes variations from tropical to sub tropical regions. The variation in altitude among Himalayan mountains, Northern Plains, Western Ghats, and Plateau Regions causes variation in temperature. The Himalayan mountains also prevent the passage of cold winds from Central Asia into the plains.Distance from the sea also causes variations as interior regions have a higher range of temperature while coastal regions have equitable temperatures.Pressure and wind systems exert influence over temperature variations through jet streams and monsoons.Coastal areas also experience the effects of warm ocean cuurents that moderate temperatures.Local relief features such as slope and aspect of topography cause variations in temperature. The eastern edge of Himalayas has higher average temperature compared to western edge which has more extreme temperatures.
