Digestive enzymes help in the digestion of food. Hydrochloric acid kills bacteria that may accompany the food. Villi increases the surface area of small intestine.

Answer:

1. Digestive enzymes : the role of digestive enzymes is to break down macromolecules into their simplest constituents in short amount of time. Functions of some enzymes are as follows:

  • Salivary amylase - digest carbohydrate
  • Pepsin and Trypsin - convert protein into peptones and peptides.
  • Pancreatic lipase - break fats into glycerides, fatty acids and glycerol.
  • Nuclease - break nuclease into nucleotides.

2. Hydrochloric acid : HCl present in the stomach helps in maintaining acidic environment inside the stomach. This acidic environment is necessary to convert Pepsinogen (inactive) into Pepsin (active). It also helps in killing pathogens which may enter digestive tract.

3. Villi : these are finger like projections present in the intestine mainly small intestine of digestive tract. These help in increasing the surface area of intestine to increase the absorption.
