the general formula of alkanes is
---------
the carbon in alkane will have the valence of 4 as usual as there are 4 electrons in its valence shell
as it is difficult to remove 4 electrons to get octet and also it is difficult to add 4 electrons to make it octet if we try to add or remove 4 electrons the carbon atom will be highly unstable and it requires very high enegry
therefore valency of carbon will be 4 be it alkane alkene or alkyne
-------
alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons
the carbon atoms are linked by only single bonds
in order to satisfy the valency 4 carbon will from covalent bonds with other atoms
