It is metals with low reactivity that are capable of reacting with steam. When such metals react with steam, they form the oxide of the metal and generate hydrogen gas. Some examples of this kind of reaction are:
Mg + H2O (g) -> MgO + H2
2Fe + 3H2O (g) -> Fe2O3 + 3H2
On the other hand, non-metals do not react with steam. So, no change is brought about when they come in contact with steam.
