Initially, when copper sulphate crystals are heated, they lose their blue colour and turn white. Water can be seen condensing on the walls of the test tube.

CuSO4.5H2O ----------> CuSO4 + 5 H2O

After prolonged heating, dry copper sulphate decomposes to give yellow CuO, Sulfur dioxide and oxygen gas, one can observe the smell fo burning hair emanating from the test tube.

2CuSO4 ------> 2CuO + 2SO2 + O2
