Answer:
As the ticket collector asked for the ticket, I dug my hand into my pocket only to discover that the purse along with the tickets had disappeared.
I dug deeper into my pocket only to realize that it was really empty. I was sure I had kept my ticket and the purse in my trouser pocket and had double- checked before leaving the house.
The ticket collector looked at me impatiently, “ Hurry up, I have more passengers to attend to.” I checked the breast pocket of my jacket. I fished out a hair band and a key (my house key).
By now I was panicking. I had only three hours to reach the ‘ Hampshire Hall’ where I would be delivering a speech at my graduation ceremony. Being the student body president, I had to be present early to welcome the Chief Guest.
This was the biggest day of my life: one that I had always dreamt of. I had been looking forward to it for two months.
I got a grip on myself. I racked my brains to remember where I had kept my purse and ticket. The mystery baffled me. I checked to see if there was a hole in my trouser pocket and there was a slim chance that the contents of my pocket had fallen in the way. There was none.
I was close to tears now. I explained my situation to the ticket-collector who showed anything but sympathy.
“Aha, another of you dishonest people whom I threw out yesterday. Pretending to have lost the ticket. Well let me tell you, you are not going to get away with it this time. You will get off at the next station.”
I knew it was useless to argue with him. He was not ready to listen to me. I had no other option but to dismount the bus at the next stop. I had been humiliated in front of about forty other passengers in the bus. I fought back tears. The day that had begun so happily for me had ended in a disaster. I had two hours to reach my high-school. My father had said that he would attend my function later in the day because he had to attend to an emergency in his hospital.
I took a cab home. It was my purse that I was worried about. There were several credit cards in it and my most valuable speech! I did not want to embarrass myself by forgetting my speech in the middle!
While I was sitting in the cab, I tried to recollect the happenings of the day.
I remembered I was leaving the house and how could I have forgotten? My trouser had caught on the nail on the threshold of the door and had torn. I had rushed in to change into a fresh pair of trousers and in my haste, I forgot to take the purse and ticket which had been left behind!!
I reached my home. To my luck, I saw my father’s car parked outside the house. I thanked my lucky stars. My father was astonished to see me. I quickly updated him. We left for my high school as soon as possible after I retrieved my purse.
When I reached my high school, I narrated the incident to all my friends. Everyone enjoyed the graduation day immensely. Even today I burst out into peals of laughter whenever I recall the incident. As one has rightly said, ‘ All’s well that ends well’.
