The chemical reaction between phenol and ferric chloride is a test for the presence of phenol. They react with each other to produce a violet complex. However, the reaction is given differently in different links:

3ArOH+FeCl3⟶Fe(OAr)3+3HCl3ArOH+FeClX3⟶Fe(OAr)X3+3HCl

source 1 , source 2

6ArOH+FeCl3⟶[Fe(OAr)6]3−+3H++3HCl6ArOH+FeClX3⟶[Fe(OAr)X6]X3−+3HX++3HCl

source

I guess the 2nd reaction is the appropriate one because it shows the formation of a complex, [Fe(OAr)6]3−[Fe(OAr)X6]X3−.

How couldFe(OAr)3Fe(OAr)X3 be considered a complex?
It should act like a ionic salt like Na+C6H5O−NaX+CX6HX5OX−or NaOAcNaOAc.
