hey mate

here is your answer....

we know that when active electrodes are used, then the metal ions present in the electrolyte gets discharged at cathode. And at the same time,to compensate this loss of concentration of ions in the electrolyte, formation of cation occurs at anode.hence, cathode gradually increases in size with deposition and anode gradually decreases and finally disappears(vanishes) resulting in the end of the electrolysis.

HOW CAN WE JUDGE whether AN ELECTRODE IS ACTIVE(ATTACKING) OR INERT(NON-ATTACKING)!

Answer:when the anode is made of the same metal which is already present in the electrolyte, then it is called active or attacking electrodes or else inactive.

for example: the electrolysis of aq.CuSO4 using Cu electrodes is an example of active electrodes.

at cathode:Cu deposition will take place.

at anode: Cu will disappear gradually.

color:blue colour will not fade away.

but when it is done with carbon or platinum then it is NON-ATTACKING or inert electrode reaction

at cathode:Cu will deposit.

at anode:o2 will be released.

1)-Here,it is active electrodes

so,at cathode: Ag(silvery grey metal) will deposit.

at anode: silver electrode will gradually disappear.

2)-here it is inactive electrodes

so,general electrolysis will occur.

at cathode:Ag(silvery grey metal) will deposit.

at anode:40H-->2H2O+02

so,oxygen will be released.

3)-it is similar to electrolysis of acidulated(acidified) water.

so,H2(hydrogen) will be released at cathode.

oxygen will be released at anode.

4)-at cathode:copper will deposit.

at anode: oxygen will be released.
