Measures To Control Water Pollution
Educating people: First and most importantly measure should be Educating people on the harmful effects of water pollution. In Ghana where illiteracy is high among the rural people, there should be public education from those skilled in these fields to help the rural people to stop harming themselves by using bad fishing practices, defecating and urinating in the water bodies.
Fines & Laws: In the urban areas Industries and factories let out a lot of their waste into the water bodies, a heavy fine imposed on them as well as Publication on their wrong doing will help them stop these practices. Laws should also be enforced to ensure fishermen desist from crude fishing methods which destroy water resources like fish, lobsters etc.
Media involvement: Using radio and television with adverts on the effects of water pollution also should be encouraged to get the message across as well as Public Service Announcements. The more movements there are to reduce water pollution the safer the water bodies will be.
Proper disposal of waste: there should be proper disposal of both solid and liquid waste. Authorities responsible for waste management in the country must provide areas for dispose of refuse. Industries should be put up to recycle waste materials. In Ghana Zoomlion has the Zoom Pak at Teshie-Nungua.
Proper application of chemical on farms: water pollution can be controlled if farmers are made to apply agro-chemicals properly on their farms through public education. This will prevent the draining of these chemicals into rivers, lakes, lagoons and streams, when rain falls. Farmers should be cautioned not to wash the containers of the chemicals in water bodies
