Answer:

Child Labor refers to the employment of children in places which deprives them of normal education, joys of childhood and is also potentially harmful and dangerous for the overall growth and development of an individual. Generally children below 14, working in hazardous conditions constitute child labor.

Child labor is a social evil that has its roots embedded deep in the Indian society. The primary cause for child labor is poverty. Children in India are usually sent to work at an early age so that they can support their families financially. Eradicating child labor is a herculean task but nonetheless is not impossible.

Free education - This is by far the most important step. Education will broaden the outlook and help in the intellectual development of the child. In a country where the rates of school drop out are one of the highest in the world, imparting education must be focused upon with utmost care.

Extra benefits - "How will I study with hunger in my stomach?" or "Will education satisfy our hunger?" are the common questions asked by those in grip of poverty when told about the importance of education. The authorities should take care that other basic necessities are also met. These include food, clothes and shelter to name a few.

Labor policies - Although labor policies are already in place, they are somewhat ineffective towards curbing child labor. Better policies should be framed and care should be taken to ensure that these are strictly implemented. Violators should be severely punished.

Awareness - Spreading awareness is essential for this cause. People should be enlightened about the various evil effects of this practice so that they are averse to this idea.

Role of NGO - Several organizations have taken up the cause for child labor. These include CRY (Child Rights and You), CAREIndia, ChildFund etc. They are doing a commendable job in this regard.

Having said so, we do find that most of the provisions are already in place but still the system is prone to failure due to lack of effective monitoring and supervision. Stress should be laid to ensure that the rules are properly put to use...
