In- situ conservation and ex - situ conservation

to protect rare and threatened species :

• in-situ conservation : on site conservation, maximum protection is given to endangered species by assigning various "hotspots", nowdays there are 34 hotspots, three of these are in India - western Ghats and sri Lanka, indo- burma and Himalayan region.

• national parks, scanturies, biosphere reserves - India itself has 14 biosphere reserves, 90 national parks, and 448 wildlife scanturies.

• ex- situ conservation - in this method plants and animals are taken out from their natural habitat.

• zoological parks, botanical gardens, and wildlife safari parks is for this purpose.

• cryopreservation technique, eggs fertilised in vitro and plants can be propogated using tissue culture methods, seed banks also serve for this purpose.
