Answer:

Element is regarded as the thing which cannot be broken down and in earlier times people believed that water is everywhere and cannot be disintegrated into smaller elements.

Answer:

In ancient times people believed there were four elements earth, air fire and water. Everything was made up of those four. It was before anyone was equipped to find out that there are 92+chemical elements and that some combined together to make chemical compounds including water. It was the best explanation they had at the time. Unlike the Bible which similarly was the first guess at how the earth and heavens came into being, we have now abandoned this model of the elements. Some people cannot set aside the bible as an explanation of how we came to be.
