A face in the dark by Ruskin Bond is a horror short story and is a perfect fit to its category.The only soulful protagonist Mr .Oliver taught students at a school at the outskirts of Simla that had resemblance to the Eton College and had got nicknamed likewise _"Eton of the east".So, oliver, a bachelor and evidently a lonely man used to walk up to the market square "Simla bazaar " everyday post his school hours with the rich bumpkins. His return trip to the school where he stayed was usually through a dark ,scary,eerie,pine woods,now,at this point of the story we feel the tension building up.Then comes the terrorizing part typical to all horror fictions, one night,his torch flickers,as usual,we assume,the wind sweeps,howls and cries through the pine trees,.that's when oliver notices a boy in a school cap sitting all alone on a rock,in all probability ,he was sobbing.Curiosity and anger boiling his blood, he goes over to him,and begins interrogation. The boy refrains from answering but when asked to look up,he does so and that's a smooth round,featureless face looking up blankly at Oliver. Oliver probably vets goosebumps,and the face scares him so great lot ,that he stragglers up the hilly forest terrain and flees for his life . On his way towards the school buildings, he encounters the lantern hanging in midair,but thankfully,that is just an illusion,the watchman is there too :).He asks oliver why he looks so terror-struck with terror and oliver coughs out every word to the watchman and for verification the fellow lights up his own featureless face and is like
"Do you mean it was like this ,Sahib?".
