Answer:

King Lear is a play written by William Shakespeare which revolves around the story of King Lear of Britain who had three daughters Goneril, Regan and his favourite Cordelia. He decided divide his Kingdom among the three daughters and their husbands but first wanted to hear how much each one of them loved him. Goneril and Regan deceived their father by saying that they love for him will never change and obtained their share of kingdom. When it is finally the turn of his youngest and favourite daughter, Cordelia, at first she refuses to say anything and then declares there is nothing to compare her love to, no words to properly express it; she says honestly but bluntly that she loves him according to her bond, no more and no less. Infuriated, Lear disinherits Cordelia and divides her share between her elder sisters and their husbands.

Kent objects to Lear's unfair treatment of Cordelia; enraged by Kent's protests, Lear banishes him from the country. Lear then summons the Duke of Burgundy and the King of France, who have both proposed marriage to Cordelia. Learning that Cordelia has been disinherited, the Duke of Burgundy withdraws his suit, but the King of France is impressed by her honesty and marries her nonetheless. The King of France is shocked by Lear's decision because up until this time Lear has only praised and favoured Cordelia. Meanwhile, Gloucester has introduced his son Edmund to Kent.

Kent is banished by Lear when he told the king that his decision was wrong. Lear announes that he will only keep hundred nights for himself and will live with his two beloved daughters only to get to know about their true intentions of their deceitful words. Goneril ill treated him. She treated him as a servant infact, worse than a servant. He was not provided proper food. The old king now knew that her declaration of love was fake. She dismissed Lear's 50 knights. Meanwhile, Lear just had a fool (a joker) , his 50 left knights and a new servant Caius(Kent in disguise). Lear left the palace in anger and still expected that his second daughter will treat him well. His fool warned him that Regan will treat him know better than Goneril. The King sent his faithful Caius to Regan who was at Glucoster's house.

Glucoster's son Edmund was jealous of his elder brother Edgar, and plotted to kill him.He tricks his father with a forged letter, making him think that Edgar plans to usurp the estate. He came to know that Duke of Cornwall is visiting his father. Taking advantage of the arrival of the duke and Regan, Edmund fakes an attack by Edgar, and Gloucester is completely taken in. He disinherits Edgar and proclaims him an outlaw.

Bearing Lear's message to Regan, Kent meets Goneril's steward at Gloucester's home, quarrels with him and is put in the stocks by Regan and her husband Cornwall. When Lear arrives, he objects to the mistreatment of his messenger, but Regan is as dismissive of her father as Goneril was. Lear is enraged but impotent. Goneril arrives and supports Regan's argument against him. Lear yields completely to his rage. He rushes out into a storm to rant against his ungrateful daughters, accompanied by the mocking Fool. Kent later follows to protect him. Gloucester protests against Lear's mistreatment. With Lear's retinue of a hundred knights dissolved, the only companions he has left are his Fool and Kent. Wandering on the heath after the storm, Edgar, in the guise of a madman named Tom o' Bedlam, meets Lear.Edgar babbles madly while Lear denounces his daughters. Kent leads them all to shelter.

King Lear gets mad at the ill treatment by his daughters. Meanwhile, Kent rushed to France and told the king and Cordelia of Lear's health. The King of France raises an army against Britain and arrived with Cordelia. On the other hand, Glucoster comes to know about Edmund's evil plan and gets mad. He tries to kill himself but is saved by Edgar the son who truly loves him. Goneril and Regan falls in love with Edmond who plans to marry one of them and obtain half of the kingdom. Goneril sent her steward to Edmund with a letter asking him to kill her husband and take her for a wife. Edgar kills the steward and found the letter. Regan, Goneril, Albany, and Edmund meet with their forces. The French army is defeated. Cordelia is put to death, Lear dies of grief of the death of his daughter. Duke of Cornwall dies and Goneril fears that her newly widowed sister would marry Edmund and kills Regan. Albany comes to know of her intentions and imprisons her where she killed herself. Edmund is killed by Edgar and he reveal his true identity to his father. Later,Britain was ruled by Albany under the guidance of loyal persons like Kent, Glucoster and Edgar.
