Answer:

This poem depicts the state of a little girl's mind who is constantly told what to do and wat not to do by her mother/elders.

starting with first paragraph-

Amanda's mother scolds her to not to bite her nails

then she scolds her for her sitting position she  is being told to sit straight and not to hunch her shoulders(i.e to sit lazily)

after being repeatidly told what to not to do she would keep her thoughts to herself and would always seem like daydreaming

[there are some lines that are in brackets those are actually her thoughts while she is being scolded]

in her thoughts she thinks about herself being a mermaid in a free sea  which is very beautiful where she is swimming slowing and enjoying her moments.

she was snapped out her blissful daydream when her mother asks her about her homework.

she would ask her did she tidy her room or not. Then she would remind her that she told her to clean her shoes.

then again she would go back to her daydreaming

Thinking  if she was an orphan she would roam the streets without anyone scolding her, she would prefer the soft dust touching hr bare feet, the silence is what appeals her more she love this feeling of  silence and freedom.

then her mom would scold her to not eat chocolates she tells her that acne would spoil her face and when she is getting all the scoldings she would be looking down her mother observes this and would tell her to look at her while she speaks with her.

she daydreams about herself being rapunzel who would not care she thinks life in a tower is very calming and rare as no one can disturb her peace ,scold her and tell her things to do and what not to do

she tells herself that if she had those beautiful bright hair she would never let her hair down and would spend her life in that tower peacefully.

her mom would again tell her not to sulk or behave lazily  she tells Amanda how moody she can be and told her that anyone who sees this would think  that she is nagging Amanda.

whilest she is nagging her Amanda feels so pressured that she would like to be an orphan rather then having everyone tell her what to do and what not to do.

this shows that if parents keep telling their kids what to do and what not to do then it will most probably make them feel unconfident and pressured it can also make them depressed . Parents should hear out their children's  thought and should understand them, they   should only guide them if they keep on making decisions on behalf of their kids it will make children feel controlled and their relationship might take a turn for worse.

Explanation:

I have explained the poem paragraph vise so it wont be a problem everything have been written in detail and if i missed something i am very sorry about it.

the lines that u see in your book that are in brackets are her thoughts when she daydream its her thinking what she want to be like or she want her life to be which only focuses on being free from all the scolding and pressure and her to be able to take her decisions herself

Amanda Summary of the poem

The poem describes a girl named Amanda and her mother who is nagging her for her mistakes. She is first pointed out most probably by her mother for biting her nails and for not sitting in the right posture. The mother also feels that Amanda sits in a very lazy manner. To this, Amanda imagines herself as a mermaid who lives a calm and relaxing life in the beautiful green sea. Further, she is nagged for not cleaning her room and shoes and also for not doing her homework. She then imagines herself to be an orphan because she is now fed up of being watched by her parents continuously. She says that she would have enjoyed her freedom then, by making the patterns of her bare feet on the sand and would live a peaceful life. Next, Amanda is scolded for eating too many chocolates as this causes pimples. She is also scolded for not listening to her mother. So, now Amanda thinks of being Rapunzel, a character from a fairy tale and wants to live in a huge tower like her. In the tower she will be alone and will live a peaceful life and will never allow anyone to come in. Finally, the mother asks her to stop being moody because she doesn’t want anyone to blame her for harassing her daughter. At this time the poet has not written any reaction from Amanda’s side. This constant nagging has made her so sad that she has even stopped to imagine herself as someone else. She used to do so in order to escape from the continuous harassment and dominance of her parents.
