The rain continues on and off for the next few weeks, meaning that Bruno is unable to see Shmuel as much as he would have hoped. When he finally gets to see Shmuel, he notices that he is even skinnier than before. Meanwhile, Mother is planning a birthday party for Father, Lieutenant Kotler has been spending a lot of time with Mother at the house, they have been getting quite close with one another.
Just before Father’s party, Bruno goes into the kitchen to find Shmuel sitting at the table, polishing glasses. Bruno gets a slice of cold chicken for himself. When he notices Shmuel again, and offers him some. At first he hesitates, but Bruno puts the food in his hand, and he scoffs is down. Kotler returns and yells at Shmuel for not polishing the glasses, then accuses him of stealing food, but Shmuel says that Bruno gave it to him. Kotler asks Bruno about it, but he denies any of it.
For about a week, Shmuel does not come back to meet him at the fence. When Shmuel finally returns, his face is covered in bruising. Bruno asks about it, but Shmuel just says it doesn’t hurt him anymore. Bruno says he’s ashamed of himself for what he did. Shmuel forgives him, and they touch hands. This is the first time they have touched.

this is a story of two friends , Bruno and Shmuel. Bruno was the son of lieutanent kotler who was a commandant in Out-With. Bruno and Shmuel did not know each other much but they were the kids of the same age. Bruno and Shmeul's living was divided by a fence .shmeul lived in the concentration camp hile bruno lived the other side of the fence. both of them had a distant friendship. but one day bruno was shocked as he noticed shmuel in his kitchen cleaning glasses. he then noticed shmuel hungry and gave him a piece of sliced chicken. shmuel felt happy and ate it. a little later bruno's father arrived and noticed shmuel eating and then filled with anger he asks shmuel if he was eating instead of cleaning the glasses ,shmuel on the other hand felt scared and told that it was bruno who gave him the food to eat. in confusion the comandant asked bruno if he knew this kid and bruno afraid and scared told that he did not know shmeul and it was his first time to see shmeul. .... a week later bruno saw shmeul at the other side of the fence and noticed a big black bruise o his face .bruno wodered if this bruise was due to falling off a bicycle as it happened with him and shmuel replied it was nothing .. later bruno realises his mistake and asks if shmuel could forgive him and smiling shmuel gives his hand for friendship ....and this was the first time they both ever touched
