It is a story which reflects on the sufferings of innocent civilians during war.it is a war like situation and the narrator's duty is to check the bridgehead of a pontoon bridge across Ebro river.several trucks ,carts, men, women and children are fleeing to Barcelona ...there the author sees an old man who is sitting quietly on the bridge and was so tired that he could hardly move....when the author asks him why he is not going then he replies that he arrives from San Carlos and has left his family behind ..his family consisted of a cat, four pairs of pigeons and two goats...he is confirmed that the cat and the pigeons can save their own lives but is worried about the goats.....the narrator's speech ends by saying that the racists are advancing towards the Ebro, the old man had just one consolation that the cats can look after themselves....so here we can understand how ar the sufferings and bloodshed occur during the war and how innocent people have to get apart from their family....
