Summary of the The Proposal
Ivan Lomov was a wealthy neighbour of another wealthy farmer Chubukov. Natalya is the twenty-five-year-old daughter of Chubukov.
All of them have a tendency to argue and quarrel with each other about almost anything. They quarrel over petty issues. They already have an ongoing dispute over a particular piece of land.
Lomov comes to the house of his neighbour Chubukov well dressed. Chubukov is surprised but he thinks that Lomov must have come to ask for money which he doesn't plan on giving. Lomov tells him that he has come to ask for Chubulov’s daughter hand in marriage. Chubukov gets excited and leaves to call his daughter Natalya.
Lomov is 35, suffers from palpitations, doesn’t sleep well and is irritable. He thinks Natalya is average-looking and a good housekeeper. Natalya arrives and the conversation continues. Chubukov somehow mentions about Oxen Meadows, the disputed land between them. Natalya believes that Oxen Meadows belong to her family. They enter into a heated argument. Amidst this quarrelling, they completely forget the real issue, the marriage proposal. Lomov is thrown out of the house. Chubukov unintentionally tells Natalya that he had come with a marriage proposal for Natalya. She immediately regrets sending him out. She tells her father to bring him back. Lomov returns and Natalya tries to talk about other things. But immediately enter into another argument involving their dogs. They continue arguing and Chubukov only makes the situation worse. During the argument Natalya notices that Lomov have fallen unconscious. Chubukov and Natalya are soon able to revive him.
Good sense prevails and Chubukov puts his daughter’s hand into Lomov’s hands and blesses them. The marriage proposal is thus finalised. But Natalya brings up the topic of her dog being superior and quarrelling continues.
