The First Tooth by Charles and Mary Lamb is about a little boy Sammy Hornby who is 6 months old and yet has no teeth.

The two concerned parents who are eagerly awaiting for their son's first tooth. One day while away for shopping Ma gets a call from the nurse maid that Sammy is a little feverish their concern changes, which they except means that his first tooth will soon be cutting through.

Based on a recent story Ma read, they are afraid that Sammy will go into convulsions which will endanger Sammy's life.

As Ma and Pa stands vigil over Sammy others around them can't quite understand the fuss includes Sammy's both the grandfather's, nurse maid and Sammy's doctor.
