Math, asked by Anonymous, 1 year ago

Suppose :
x,y is a point in a line perpendicular to x axis(touches the axis in 2,0)
We write the equation as :
x=2
==> x-2=0
But wait according to the formula:
y-y1 = m(x-x1)
m=tan theta
=tan 90
=undefined.......
slope is undefined ............
So how can we write x=2.
Plz explain me.
Brainly atleast give me one useful answer i expect this one atleast...............

Anonymous: x must not be 2.
Anonymous: what will be 2?
Anonymous: bcz the line is perpendicular to x - axis, then how can x be 2.?
Anonymous: it passes through 2,0............ x = 2 as the value of x is constant and y changes throughout the line
Anonymous: It can be 2.
Anonymous: but i asked something else ? slope is undefined according to formula then how do we get the value of x.
Anonymous: if m = 1 / 0 ( undefined), then on multiplying 0 to ( y - y1 ), we will get x = x1 and similarly y = y1.
Anonymous: wait a sec m= undefined .... you cant multiply like that cause 1/0 is mathematicall error
Anonymous: wait let me inbox u

Here's your answer...

Well, if you draw a graph of x = x1, it will be every point on it will have the same x1. So the formula doesn't matter for lines perpendicular to the x or y-axis.

However, you can look at it this way.

tan 90 = infinity

y-y1 = infinity×(x-x1)
(y-y1)/infinity = x-x1

Since any number/0 = infinity,
any number/infinity = 0

So the above equation becomes...
0 = x-x1
x = x1

Anonymous: tan 90=infinty?? tan90 = undefined =1/0 thats not infinity?
Anonymous: anyways at least u r better than all the others at least u did not spam....................
UnknownDude: I know that. Its mathematically wrong. But it served the purpose. Technically, if such a situation arises, you're supposed to ignore the slope and simply write x=a
Anonymous: mathemetically this is wrong? then how can the formula be derived mathematically? if no derivation is present then why should we believe in the formula.....?

Step-by-step explanation:

The equation of the line passing through (2,0) and perpendicular to x-axis will be a line parallel to y-axis. So, the equation will be x = 2.

So, the equation of the vertical line passing through (2,0) would be x = 2.

The slope of the vertical line is undefined.

Therefore, the equation of the line is x = 2 and slope is undefined.

Hope it helps!
