Explanation:

If the parents want to purchase gold jewellery then they should look for the BIS Hallmark logo which defines the purity of the gold purchased. The BIS or the Bureau of Indian Standards Hallmark is composed of four components. They are the:

  • BIS Mark :

BIS mark denotes that it is hallmarked by BIS, which is the only agency approved by the Indian Government for hallmarking of gold on the basis of its purity.

  • Purity level and fineness :

The purity level is denoted by Karats. Fineness measured in parts per thousand also denotes purity. The value 22KT 916, 22KT denotes ornament jewellery and 916 its fineness.

  • Hallmarking and assaying Centre’s Identification mark or number :

This is the standardized licensed laboratory approved by the Indian Government that assays and hallmarks the gold.

  • Jeweller’s identification mark or number :

This denotes the jewellery maker’s identification.
