In our tooth there is a layer called enamel . It is indestructible . when we ate something sweet  the molecules of sugars the reacting site attach to our teeth .

Also our teeth has some self cleansing property  which use acids to remove the food particles in our teeth large globules also simples by salivary amylase (30% digestion) .

so due to the acidic property our tooth got acidic the toothpastes are basic they neutralize the reaction so that our teeth stay in neutral state (7 pH ) . and it may not lead to tooth decay.
