Explanation:
The food gets crunched in the mouth, the first part of alimentary canal. Teeth, tongue and saliva help in the process. Then, the food gets swallowed and goes in the esophagus. The peristalsis movement pushes the food down from the esophagus to the stomach. In the stomach, the digestive juices and the muscular churning break down the food particles and then the food goes to the small intestine for complete digestion. The small intestine has 3 parts, duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The semi digested food that has come from the stomach gets digested with the help of secreted juices from the liver and pancreas. The liver secretes bile juice. The bile juice is stored in the gall bladder. Bile juice breaks down large fat globules into small fat globules. The process is called emulsification. These juices then further break these particles in glycerol. While the pancreas secrete pancreatic juice which helps in breaking down glucose and proteins into simpler compounds or amino acids. In the small intestine, there are finger like projections called villi which help in absorbing the food particles through the blood vessels present in them. The digested food is then carried out to different parts of body through the blood for utilization, production of energy or even storage. This process is called assimilation. The undigested and unabsorbed food is then passed on to the large intestine. This part of the digestive system absorbs water and necessary salts from undigested food. No digestion takes place in this part. The remaining part is pushed to the rectum. The solid waste is stored in the rectum in the form of fasces and expelled from the body through the anus by a process called defecation.
Hope it helps.
