The burning of fuels such as oil, coal and LNG (liquefied natural gas) fires a boiler to generate high-temperature, high-pressure steam. This steam is used to drive a steam turbine. A generator attached to the steam turbine generates electricity.

The raw feed coal from the coal storage is first crushed into small pieces using crushers. Then the pieces are conveyed to coal hopper at the boilers.

- The coal is next pulverised into a very fine powder so that coal will undergo complete combustion during the combustion process.

- Ash hopper is a water-filled steel tank to collect bottom ash from a steam-generating broiler.

- Water is heated and turns into steam and spins the turbine that converts the energy from the high-pressure steam to mechanical energy

- The condenser condenses the steam from the exhaust of the turbine into a liquid to allowed it to be pumped.

-The cooling tower is a semi-enclosed device for evaporative cooling of water by contact with air. The hot water from the condenser is fed to the tower on the top and allowed to tickle in form of drops. the air flows from the bottom of the tower i.e. perpendicular to the direction of water flows and then exhaust to the atmosphere after effective cooling.
