Buddhists in Maharashtra celebrate this day as it is believed to be the day Emperor Asoka converted to Buddhism. This grand festival and congregation is held at Nagpur and millions gather to remember the Dhamma-Chakra Pravartan done by Dr Ambedkar to convert to Buddhism.
Hindus in Odisha and West Bengal observe this festival primarily on days six through ten of Navratri. On the tenth day, Durga's victory over evil is celebrated as Vijayadashami in Bengal and Dussehra in Odisha and North India, Dussehra also commemorates Rama's vistory over the demon Ravana as described in the Ramayana.
Hindus in Maharashtra, after worshipping goddess Durga for the nine days of Navratri, worships Saraswati on Dussehra. People consider it an auspicious day to start something new. Gold is purchased on this day and coconut ladoos are prepared as part of the celebration.
