The first thing you do is to arrange it in ascending or descending order which gives you:

5, 6, 9, 9, 9, 11, 11

one by one you cut out out the numbers from both sides

5, 6, 9, 9, 9, 11, 11

5, 6, 9, 9, 9, 11, 11

5, 6, 9, 9, 9, 11, 11

The 9 in bold is the median

Mean

mean = $\frac{sum of terms}{number of terms}$

mean = $\frac{11+11+9+9+5+6+9}{7}$

mean = $\frac{60}{7}$

mean = 8$\frac{4}{7}$ / 8.571428571
