The war was both enabling and disabling event for the author. Enabling in the sense that before war author always lived in uncertainty and fear of being caught by the Nazis. Then the war broke out, She along with her mother had to leave their country to save their life. After the war was over, life became normal. The uncertainty and fear of being caught was gone for ever. Bread was available; people could sleep in their own homes; families were reunited. There was peace in life now.
The war was disabling in the sense the author had lost her mother. The memories of the pain and suffering that they had undergone, haunted her. She returned back to Holland. The memories of the pre-war days haunted her and made her feel lonely.
