Answer:

Son's age = 10 years and father's age = 40

Step-by-step explanation:

Let say the present age of son = x years

Therefore, present age of father = 4 X x = 4x years

5 years hence

Age of father will be = 3 times his son

therefore ,

4x + 5 = 3( x+5)

or, 4x + 5 = 3x + 15

or, 4x-3x = 15 - 5

or, x = 10

So, Present age of son is 10 years

and present age of father is 4 X 10 = 40 years

Given :

  • The age of father is 4 times the age of his son .
  • Five years hence the age of father will be three times the age of his son.

To find :

  • Their present ages.

Solution :

Let the present age of son is x years and the present age of father be y years.

According to 1st condition :-

  • The age of father is 4 times the age of his son.

y = 4x................(i)

According to 2nd condition :-

  • Five years hence the age of father will be three times the age of his son.

After 5 years,

Age of son = (x+5 ) years

Age of father = (y+5) years

→ y+5 = 3(x+5)

→ y +5 = 3x +15

→ 4x + 5 = 3x +15 [ put y = 4x ]

→ 4x -3x = 15 - 5

→ x = 10

  • Present age of son = 10 years.
  • Present age of father = 4×10 = 40 years.

Therefore , the present age of son is 10 years and present age of father is 40 years.
