The Ahom kingdom (1228-1826 CE) was established by the Sukhapaa, the leader of the Tai group and his 9000 followers. Until the British gained control in 1826, the Ahom kingdom controlled the Brahmaputra valley and the territory of modern Assam.
The Ahoms crossed the Paktai hills and reached the Brahmaputra valley in 1228. Wet-rice cultivation, then extant and a tradition of writing were the technologies brought up by them. They settled in the region south of the Brahmaputra river and to the east of the Dikho river. Today most of their population is settled in this region.

The Ahom Dynasty, also called Kingdom of Assam during medieval times was a medieval kingdom in the valley of Brahmaputra in Assam which preserved its dominion for nearly six-hundred years and efficaciously repelled Mughal spreading out in North-East India.
According to legends, there were four princes in the kingdom of Tai known as Mung-Mao-Lung in the province of China. These four princes desired to expand and develop their kingdom and also each of them wanted to have their own kingdom.
They departed on an expedition accompanied by a group of soldiers and nobles as well as a large group of people. The eldest prince Suakapha who had advanced westwards, crossed the Patkai ranges and entered the glorious kingdom of Assam in the 13th century i.e. 1228 A.D and established a majestic 'Tai kingdom' in Assam, which was the first kingdom of Tai-Ahom in Assam.
